The Angel Of Jehovah Is God Himself
I wanted to touch upon this subject of the Angel of Jehovah or Yahovah, [Yahweh] because if any diligent Christian or studier of the Bible stays consistent in reading the Holy Scriptures, specifically the Old Testament, [Hebrew Scriptures], they would notice this Angel of Jehovah appearing many times to people and speaking to people. However, what many readers and sadly even Christians may not realize from the verses where this specific Angel is talked about, is that the Angel of God Himself. Now some of you may be thinking amongst yourselves saying: "Oh wait, how could God be an angel of He is God who created the angels?" It's simple, Go back and read the passages, fortunately for you I will be going over some of the verses in this article. I will also be going into some of the original Hebrew scriptures using an Interlinear of the Hebrew Scriptures and looking to New Testament scriptures that point back to the Angel but call It God. For the example of the Bible verses I will be quoting from The New World Translation and the Study Bible Version which makes citations I will also make the words blue and italicize the section of the verses that I am emphasizing that prove the Angel is God. The Angel of Jehovah is also called the Angel of His Presence. It is also sometimes not called by that name in the verses It appears in but is called the Angel of Jehovah later on, in other verses that refer back to these situations where it wasn't called by It's name.
1 Moses became a shepherd of the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. While he was leading the flock to the west side of the wilderness, he eventually came to the mountain of the true God, to Horeb. 2 The Jehovah's angel appeared to him in a flame of fire in the midst of a thornbush. As he kept looking, he saw that the thornbush was on fire, and yet the thornbush was not consumed. 3 So Moses said: "I will go over to inspect this unusual sight to see why the thornbush does not burn up." 4 When Jehovah saw that he went over to look, God called to him out of the thornbush and said: "Moses! Moses!" to which he said: "Here I am." 5 Then he said: "Do not come any nearer. Remove your sandals from your feet, because the place where you are standing is holy ground." 6 He went on to say: "I am the God of your Father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Then Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at the true God.
We read here that while Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law, he went up upon the mountain of the true God and when Jehovah's angel came into a thornbush in a flame of fire. Moses was amazed because even though this fire was in the bush, the bush was not eaten up by the fire. Jehovah saw Moses approaching the fiery thornbush and began to speak out of the bush. The voice of Jehovah coming from within the bush said, "I am the God of your Father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob."
Now some may try to say that since God is omnipresent(present everywhere at the same time), He decided to have His voice echo out from within the bush to Moses. Yet why did the Angel appear in the bush if God would use His divine power to project His voice out of the bush anyways? This is not as big of a deal to argue compared to what the second half of verse 6 says. Moses hid his face why? After all these things, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at the true God, Jehovah. But wait, when did Jehovah appear before Moses? The verse says the Angel of Jehovah was there, in the bush. Why would Moses hid his face from the voice of Jehovah? He wouldn't. He was obviously looking at God yet did not know it was God Almighty until God told Moses that He was God. Moses was looking at the Angel not knowing what/who it was but when He heard the voice say that: "I am God" he then decided to hide his face from He who was in the bush.
13 Moses said to the true God: "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your forefathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is his name?' What should I say to them?" 14 So God said to Moses: "I Will Became What I Choose to Become." And he added: "This is what you are to say to the Israelites, 'I Will Become has sent me to you.'"
Here in Exodus 3, we are told that God's name is "I Will Become". Christians who are literate in the Holy Scriptures, they are confused and questioning why what God actually said is missing here and this "fake" or badly interpreted name replaced it. The Society purposefully mistranslated this section of the verse because Christ sited this name and gave it to Himself in John 8:58. Now, the Jehovah Witness Bible doesn't read that way in John either to break this connection.
30 "After 40 years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning thornbush.
35 This same Moses whom they had disowned, saying: 'Who appointed you ruler and judge?' is the very one God sent as both ruler and deliverer by means of the angel who appeared to him in the thornbush.
Luke is telling us here in Acts that it was the angel that appeared to Moses on Mount Sinai in the bush and by the means of the angel that Moses was able to be ruler and judge of the Israelites. Now these next two verse examples will blow your minds away, even Christians might not even know this unfortunately.
- Exodus 19:1-7 Part I
- Acts 7:38-39 Part II
You see here that Luke is saying the angel came to Mount Sinai and spoke to Moses and gave Moses living pronouncements. Do you see the "y" that is in the middle of verse 38? In the JW Bible, they have citation markers and they put under "y" that Genesis 19 was when the angel came to Moses on the Mount Sinai. Next look at the "z", the JW cite Exodus 21:1 where Moses is told all the other Laws of God and they also cite Deuteronomy 9:10 which is referring back to Exodus 32:4 when Moses received the Ten Commandments a second time.
4 Jehovah spoke face-to-face with you in the mountain, out of the fire. "b" 5 I was standing between Jehovah and you at the time to convey to you the word of Jehovah, for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said: 6 "I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Here in Deuteronomy, Moses is speaking to all of Israel and reminding them back to the first time that he received the Ten Commandments the first time. He tells all of Israel that he was speaking face-to-face with Jehovah God who was on the mountain in a the fire. Again observe the "b". The society cites here in Deuteronomy back to Acts 7:38-39. Therefore the Society is admitting, yet no openly, that the angel of Jehovah is Jehovah who was called Jehovah by Moses and Israel that came down onto Mount Sinai.
- Judges 2:1 Part I
- Judges 2:10-12 Part II
In Judges 2:1 we were told by the angel that he brought the Israelites and sworn to the forefathers and made the covenant with Israel. And then here later on in Judges 2 we are told that Jehovah God brought Israel out of Egypt.
20 "I am sending an angel ahead of you "+" to guard you on the way and to bring you into the place that I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him, and obey his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgressions, because my name is him.
God is talking to Moses after giving him all the Laws that Israel will follow. God says two things about the angel, 1. Don't anger this angel because he won't forgive your transgressions, and 2, This angel also has God's name within him. What does that mean to have God's name within? Today we associate names as an attribute to someone to make distinction between all people to specifically talk about a specific person. However, scholars and examiners of the Bible discovered that especially in the Old Hebrew Scriptures that a name can actually signify one's origin or one's characteristics (essence). God was saying that this angel has His characteristics and origin rather then a name to be called by. So here we have an angel that has God's characteristics and has the ability to pardon transgressions or punish by not pardoning. Also make note the "+" the Society cites Exodus 14:19.
Some of you are probably again questioning within yourselves why did the angel of Jehovah who we know was speaking to Moses here speak about itself instead of saying it itself would go ahead of Israel? Because at other times, this angel has been called God, Jehovah and had not made itself known as the angel to people. Let's look at the example I am referring to.
- Judges 13:16-18 Part I
- Judges 13:20-22 Part II
Judges 13:16 tells us that Manoah didn't this man that stood before them was the angel of Jehovah. Manoah asked this person who looked like a man, but was really the angle of Jehovah, what it's name was. Yes Manoah might have been asking for the "name" to mention this man specifically when praying to Jehovah, thanking Jehovah, or Manoah might have been asking for the origin of this man who was telling them of this promise. We surely know how the angel interpreted the question. The angel said, 'why do you want to know my name because it is wonderful?' now really what name is wonderful compared to any other name? Here is where I will show you the first example of Hebrew of a passage.
Example 1A (biblehub.com)
Example 1B (biblehub.com)
Strong's Concordance here says the Hebrew term "pili" means wonderful as in incomprehensible. This is how we know this angel is not a created being. All of mankind can understand the origin and characteristics of angels because they are created beings by our God, yet the only one with origins and characteristics that are incomprehensible is God Himself. Moses had the same reaction to this angel when the angel appeared in the burning thornbush. Moses hid his face from the face of the true God who he was looking at.Let's now look at some more verses about this angel that really are confusing for Arians and Unitarians and even amaze Trinitarians.
- Numbers 22:22-23 Part I
- Numbers 22:32-35 Part II
- Numbers 22:38 Part III
In Numbers 22 we are told the story of Balaam and his donkey. The angel of Jehovah comes down to this road that Balaam is traveling on, and has his sword drawn but did not allow Balaam or the other men from seeing him. The angel only allowed the donkey to see him. The donkey knew what this angel was and tired to lead Balaam away from the sword of this angel. Balaam not being able to see the angel began to beat the donkey because he assumed the donkey was stupid for trying to go off the road or path. After beating it three times, the angel allows Balaam to see the angel and asks why Balaam beat the donkey three times.(It knew the answer but wanted to see Balaam's answer) The angel says that it came to offer resistance because Balaam's ways go against the will of the angel. What angel in heaven do we have to follow the will of? None, we attempt to try to stay faithful to the will of God alone. This angel must be God if it has a will that must be followed. The angel then says that if the donkey didn't try to avoid him, he would have kill Balaam and let the donkey go. Immediately after the angel said these things Balaam responds saying that he sinned because he didn't know it was him. Now in all of Numbers 22 we never see the angel of Jehovah appear to Balaam, we only see Jehovah coming to Balaam. So Balaam says he was sinning because he didn't realize Jehovah came to him this time until he made himself known. Then the angel says that you can only speak out of your mouth what I tell you. Then Balaam says to Balak that he can only speak what God tells him to say.
- Exodus 13:21-22 Part I
- Exodus 14:19 Part II
So in chapter 13 were are told that it is Jehovah who is in the pillar of cloud and fire, yet one chapter later we are told it is the angel of Jehovah who is in the pillars. This angel must be Jehovah but not the Father, who is also Jehovah.
- Genesis 28:10-22 Part I
- Genesis 31:10-13 Part II
Genesis 28 had a dream of a stairway that stretched to heaven and angels went up and down it and standing at the very top was Jehovah and He told Jacob who He is and promised Jacob that his offspring will be like the dust of the earth and will be everywhere on the earth. Then Jacob woke up, anointed a pillar to God and named the place Bethel(meaning House of God). He then made a vow to God. Genesis 31 Jacob is tending to the flock of Laban and before verse 10-13 we are told that all the striped, speckled and spotty goats were to go to Jacob and when the Angel of God came to Jacob the angel said 'look all the striped, spotty and speckled he-goats are mating with the flock because I have seen what Laban has done to you'. So this angel can see what was happening to Jacob from heaven and when he came down to Jacob, he made all the impure goats mate with all the other goats so that all the goats would have impurities so Laban would have none for cheating Jacob. The angel goes on to say that 'I am the true God of Bethel where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me'. Wow, who is this angel to call itself the God of the House of God(Bethel) and say that Jacob made a vow to it?
- Genesis 32:24-32 Part I
- Hosea 12:3-5 Part II
We are told in Genesis 32 that in the night a man appeared and began wrestling with Jacob, but Jacob was prevailing so the man simply touched Jacob's hip was dislocated and left Jacob walking with a limp all his life. The man asks to be let go but Jacob refuses unless this man blesses him. The man asks the name of Jacob and then gives Jacob the name Israel because Jacob wrestled God and with men and won. Jacob was wrestling God who appeared as a man and Jacob one. Do you know what's significant about why God dislocated his hip? Up until this point Jacob had always ran away from problems not only physical problems but Spiritual and to remind Jacob, and then God renamed him Israel and from this occurrence forward, Jacob never runs away from any of his problems again. Then Jacob asks the man about his name and the man says that phrase we have touched on before, 'Why is it that you ask my name'. The Contemporary English Version translates what the man says as: “Don't you know who I am?” Implying that this man knows that Jacob should recognize Him. Next Jacob says after the man blesses him and leaves that he named that area Peniel because 'I have seen God face-to-face and my life was spared.' After the many blesses him, he realized it was God. Then Hosea tells us that Jacob did wrestled with God, an angel and won. He, the angel was found at Bethel and spoke and Jehovah is his name. WOW So now it makes sense why the Contemporary English Version translate what that man says that way because it was the Angel of Jehovah who is called Jehovah. There is another Bible translation called the Peshitta Holy Bible, it's translated from Aramaic and here is how verse 29 of Genesis 32 reads: "And Yaquuv asked him and said, “Show me your name”; he said to him, “Why do you ask about my name?”, and he blessed him there." Yaquuv is Jacob and he asks for the man to show his name. So here can see that Jacob was asking for the man to show him his origin or characteristics(essence). Also note the first "+" in verse 26 of Genesis 32 cites Hosea 12:4 and the second "+" in verse 29 cites Judges 13:17-18.
1 After that God said to Jacob: "Rise, go up to Bethel and dwell there, and make an altar there to the true God who appeared to you when you were running away from Esau your brother."
Example 2 (biblehub.com)
Anyone who has read the Bible has probably noticed that in the Old Testament, God talks about Himself in the third-person, and Genesis 35:1 is a perfect example of that by the English. To the English reader, God is talking about God, himself, however in Hebrew Elohim is talking about El. Arians or Unitarians would still say that God is talking about Himself, yet wouldn't God say Himself instead of saying God, specifically a different form of God making the God who He is talking about Distinct from Himself? Here is a true example of God the Father and some other "person" who is also God according to the Father. - Genesis 3:5 Part I
- Genesis 3:22 Part II
- 2 Samuel 14: 17 Part III
In Genesis 3, that to be like God is to know Good and bad, of course God has wisdom of Good and Bad way beyond what we have, yet until the fall of the sin, mankind only knew perfection. Later in chapter 3 God speaks in a plural form saying that, 'man has become like one of US'. Who is God talking to and who else is like God and knows Good and Bad like God? We are told in 2 Samuel 14, the angel of Jehovah can distinguish good and bad like God. Later in chapter 14 we are even told that this angel has knowledge of all things like God does:
20 Your servant Joab has done this to change the appearance of things, but my lord has wisdom like that of the angel of the true God and knows all that is happening in the land."
In a Psalm we are even told this angel of Jehovah has another attribute that only God is supposed to have.
7 The angel of Jehovah camps all around those fearing Him, and he rescues them.
So the angel of Jehovah can surround everyone who fears him at the same time and can rescue them all. How can a created being be around a group of people, every single one at the same time?
15 Then he blessed Joseph and said: "The true God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the true God who has been shepherding me during all my life until this day, 16 The angel who has been recovering me from all calamity, "+" bless the boys. "+"
15 Then he blessed Joseph and said: "The true God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the true God who has been shepherding me during all my life until this day, 16 The angel who has been recovering me from all calamity, "+" bless the boys. "+"
Example 3 (biblehub.com)
We are at the end of Israel's life and he is praying to God and doing a blessing of Joseph's sons, and Israel mentions not only God in the prayer but the angel. The first "+" cites Genesis 28:15, and the second one cites Genesis 32:26. Israel is praying to God*(previously said: God the Father) and this Angel and Israel specifically asks this angel to bless the boys, hence why it sites Genesis 32:36, and the Hebrew term for "bless" is singular meaning it go to the angel.
9 Jehovah's angel then said to her: 'Return to your mistress and humble yourself under her hand." 10 Then Jehovah's angel said: "I will greatly multiply your offspring, so that they will be too numerous to count." 11 Jehovah's angel added: "Here you are pregnant, and you will give birth to a son, and you must name him Ishmael, for Jehovah has heard your affliction. 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him, and he will dwell opposite all his brothers."13 Then she called on the name of Jehovah, who was speaking to her: "You are a God of sight," for she said; "Have I here actually looked upon the one who sees me?"
Hagar had run away from Sarai here and was pregnant and the angel of Jehovah appeared to her and told her to return to Sarai. Then this angel promises something shocking, 'I will greatly multiply your offspring, so that they will be too numerous to count.' This angel just promised Hagar that he will multiply her offspring beyond the ability to count. This angel then does another wonderful thing, He tells Hagar she is going to give birth to and this angel knows what type of personality her son will have and yet the son isn't even born yet. So this angel knows the gender of the baby and knows what his personality will be in the future of his life. But yet the actual shocking information in this verse was said by Hagar. The verse said that Hagar called upon the "name of Jehovah" who was speaking to her. Wait, I thought the angel of Jehovah was speaking with Hagar? Then Hagar says "You are a God of sight, have I here actually looked upon the one who sees me?" So here she is called the name of Jehovah, angel of Jehovah, a God of sight and then is questioning if she is actually alive because she is looking at God. Wow, this person called the angel of Jehovah and name of Jehovah must be God.
- Genesis 22:1-2 Part I
- Genesis 22:11-12 Part II
- Genesis 22:15-18 Part III
At the beginning of Genesis 22 we are told that the true God put Abraham to the test and asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son to Him. Abraham trusted God so much that Abraham believed that God would raise his son up after sacrificing him to fulfil the promised God made to him. Hebrews 11:19. Next the angel of Jehovah called out of the heavens down to Abraham. Now wait, Why did this angel call out of heaven to speak to Abraham? Why didn't God the Father call down from Heaven, is heaven not the kingdom and throne room of the Father? Who does this angel think it is to call out of heaven instead of coming down?
Then the angel says that Abraham did not withheld his son from him, the angel. Wait a second angel, I thought you only sacrifice to God alone? What do you mean Abraham was supposed to sacrifice his son to you and not God the Father? The angel then calls out of heaven again and says, 'By myself I swear declares Jehovah.'
I will be working on another article immediately when this one goes up and the article will be about the Word of Jehovah is Jehovah according to how it is spoken about and what things are attributed to it.
"The LORD bless you
and keep you;
the LORD make His face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn His face toward you
and give you peace." ☦
